- City Navigator North America 2009 Standard / NT:
-
There are two versions of City Navigator North America available: Standard and NT. These products provide the same information, but differ in the following three properties:
- The map data of the NT version uses a stronger compression algorithm, which means, it requires less memory. But these maps require a GPS device which supports this improved compression method. The following models support NT maps: GARMIN models of the
Colorado- and Oregon-series, Edge 605/705, eTrex HC/HCx-series,
GPSMAP60Cx/CSx, GPSMAP76Cx/CSx, Nuvi-series, StreetPilot C-series and StreetPilot 7500, Zumo-series
.
- GPS devices which support traffic information require NT maps.
- When you transfer the detailed maps of the standard version, you have the choice to including routing information or not. Consequently, the data consumes more or less memory on the GPS. The detailed maps of the NT version always include routing information. The routing information is required for the GPS in order to compute routes, if you do not transfer the routing information, the GPS cannot calculate a route. It is useful to transfer maps without routing information if the GPS can display
maps, but does not support autorouting, such as the GARMIN eMap or the GARMIN eTrex Vista.
Media:
The NT version of City Navigator North America is available on two different media: DVD and uSD/SD memory card. What are the differences ?
- The CDrom/DVD has the advantage that the detailed maps are also available on the computer which is very convenient for planing for example. On the other hand,
the maps must be unlocked for a particular GPS device - for most products (e.g. City Navigator) you can unlock the maps for only one device, for some products
(e.g. Swiss Topo) for two devices. In addition, the detailed maps must be transferred from the computer to the GPS device, which might require a significant
amount of time, depending on the amount of data that you wish to transfer. For most maps, updates will become available on an approximately yearly basis
(charges may apply).
- The uSD/SD memory card has the advantage that the maps are immediately available as soon as you plug in the memory card. In addition, you may use the maps on
any number of devices, but only on one device at the time. The GPS has to have a SD or microSD slot. The data is stored on a uSD memory card, but an uSD-to-SD
adapter is included. No updates will be available for maps stored on uSD/SD memory cards.
Features:
- Basic features: Manage GPS data on a PC, exchange data between a PC and a GPS receiver (CDrom only).
- Autorouting on a PC: Computes routes on a computer. These routes can be transferred to a GPS device (CDrom only).
- Map areas: The map is divided into 1050 areas and requires a total of 1415 MB memory on a GPS, but a single area requires only 5.33 MB or less. Depending on the amount of memory available in the GPS receiver, one or more areas can be transferred to any GARMIN GPS device that supports maps (see examples) (CDrom). If you buy a uSD/SD memory card, then the complete map is available on the GPS instantly.
- Autorouting: This product is particularly designed for the GARMIN models of the
Colorado- and Oregon-series, Edge 605/705, eTrex C/Cx/HC/HCx-series, GPSMAP60-series, GPSMAP76-series,
Nuvi-series, StreetPilot-series, Zumo-series, cfQue 1620 as well as GPS10/18/20 with nRoute or MobilePC
because it supports the autorouting feature of these products.
- Packaging: One DVD including customer code to receive free unlock code or one uSD memory card with uSD-to-SD adapter. Does not include a cable for data exchange, if you need such a connection cable, see our selection of options.

Maps are downloaded with 115200 Baud, which means, it takes about 2 minutes to transfer 1 MB of data. The optional USB memory module programmer provides much faster data transfer for GPS devices which support memory modules.
Transferring one or more maps to a GPS device which supports maps adds the following features to the GPS:
- Significant increase of the level of details: The transferred maps overlay the built-in map on the areas they cover. Outside these areas, the built-in map is still available.
- Extended search functions:
- Find points of interest: Search the list of restaurants, hotels, attractions, entertainment, shopping, services, transportation, plus emergency and government addresses.
- Find addresses: Enter a street name and number plus optionally the name of a city or a postal code.
- Find intersections: Enter two street names plus optionally the name of a city or a postal code.
- Autorouting on the GPS: The detailed maps of MapSource City Navigator support autorouting on the GPS, given the GPS device provides autorouting capabilities.
