Navigation software with detailed topographic map of Switzerland

The topographic Swiss map is available in four different versions: Switzerland East, Switzerland West and Switzerland Full on CDrom and Switzerland Full on uSD/SD memory card. The image below shows the coverage of the full map plus the boundaries of Switzerland East and Switzerland West. The area between the two lines with the city of Luzern is covered by both maps (the maps overlap). The eastern part of Switzerland with the cities of Zürich, Lugano, Chur etc. is covered by Switzerland East. The western part of Switzerland with the cities of Basel, Bern, Geneva etc. is covered by Switzerland West. As its name indicates, Switzerland full covers the whole area of Switzerland including all the cities mentioned above.

Media:

The topographic map of Switzerland is available on two different media: CDrom and uSD/SD memory card. What are the differences ?

The CDrom has the advantage that the detailed maps are also available on the computer which is very convenient for planing for example. On the other hand, the maps must be unlocked for a particular GPS device - you can unlock the maps for two devices. In addition, the detailed maps must be transferred from the computer to the GPS device, which might require a significant amount of time, depending on the amount of data that you wish to transfer.

The uSD/SD memory card has the advantage that the maps are immediately available as soon as you plug in the memory card. In addition, you may use the maps on any number of devices, but only on one device at the time. The GPS has to have a SD or microSD slot. The data is stored on a uSD memory card, but an uSD-to-SD adapter is included.

Features and Packaging:

All versions of this program provide the same features on the GPS, regardless of the media.

• Map on GPS: Topographic map of Switzerland, shows elevation contours and natural features plus official hiking and biking routes which are clearly marked and indicated by their number or name.
• Autorouting on GPS: This product is particularly designed for the GARMIN models of the Colorado- and Oregon-series, Edge 605/705, eTrex C/Cx/HC/HCx-series, GPSMAP60-series, GPSMAP76-series, Nuvi-series, StreetPilot-series, Zumo-series, cfQue 1620 as well as GPS10/18/20 with nRoute or MobilePC because it supports the autorouting feature of these products.
• Packaging: CDrom with customer code (an Internet connection is required to register and unlock the map) or uSD/SD memory card plus a user's manual in German and in French.

System Requirements for versions on CDrom:

The products on CDrom provide all features described under MapSource to exchange data between a PC and a GARMIN GPS receiver.

• Basic features: Manage GPS data on a PC, exchange data between a PC and a GPS receiver.
• Autorouting on a PC: Computes routes on a computer and provides elevation profiles of such routes. These routes can be transferred to a GPS device.
• Map on computer: Topographic map of Switzerland, shows elevation contours and natural features plus official hiking and biking routes which are clearly marked and indicated by their number or name.
• Map areas:
  • Topo Switzerland East: This map is divided into 129 areas and requires a total of 140.7 MB memory on a GPS, but a single area requires only 2.05 MB or less. Depending on the amount of memory available in the GPS receiver, one or more areas can be transferred to any GARMIN GPS device that supports maps.
  • Topo Switzerland West: This map is divided into 132 areas and requires a total of 131.6 MB memory on a GPS, but a single area requires only 1.74 MB or less. Depending on the amount of memory available in the GPS receiver, one or more areas can be transferred to any GARMIN GPS device that supports maps.
  • Topo Switzerland Full: This map is divided into 248 areas and requires a total of 367.5 MB memory on a GPS, but a single area requires only 2.21 MB or less. Depending on the amount of memory available in the GPS receiver, one or more areas can be transferred to any GARMIN GPS device that supports maps.
• System Requirements: See here. This product does not include a cable for data exchange with a PC. If you need such a connection cable, see our selection of options.
• Disk space: approx. 500 MB for full installation of Topo Switzerland Full (approx. 300 MB for Topo Switzerland West or Topo Switzerland East)

A very helpful supplement to the program MapSource is the software GARMIN BaseCamp, see www.garmin.com/support/mappingsw.jsp. This is especially true if you are using a GPS from one of the following model series: Colorado, Dakota, Montana, Oregon or GPSmap 62.

Prices:

Note: The new version V3 supports the well known vector based display as with V2, but also introduces a new grid pattern based display which provides exactly the same look as the printed topographic Swiss maps. Version 3 is only supported by the models Dakota 20, Edge 800, GPSmap62/62s/62st, GPSmap78/78s and on all models of the Montana and the Oregon series. If you purchased a CDrom with V2 full or a memory card with V2.1 after April 1st 2011, then you are entitled for a free update to V3. There are also updates available for previous versions of Topo Switzerland bought earlier, see below.

Topo Switzerland V3 is only available on uSD memory card, there is no version on CDrom. V3 covers all of Switzerland, there is no version "east" or "west". The map is available for use on a computer with the software BaseCamp (see www.garmin.com/support/mappingsw.jsp), if the memory card is plugged into the computer directly or if the GPS is connected to the computer via USB cable.

Important: For a successful update, you must own a previous version of Topo Switzerland. If you own a CDrom, please provide the 16 character activation code (to be found inside the CD cover) and the date of the invoice as a comment in the order form ! Transferring one or more maps to a GPS device which supports maps adds the following features to the GPS:

1. Significant increase of the level of details: The transferred maps overlay the built-in map on the areas they cover. Outside these areas, the built-in map is still available.
2. Extended search functions: Find points of interest, such as restaurants, hotels, attractions, entertainment, shopping, services, transportation, plus emergency and government addresses, but also geographic features such as mountains, lakes, rivers etc.
3. Autorouting on the GPS: The maps of this product support the autorouting feature of the GPS models which are capable of computing routes.
