GARMIN MapSource City Navigator Europe

Navigation software with detailed map of Europe and autorouting

Overview:

There are two versions of City Navigator Europe: Standard and NT. These products provide the same information, but differ in the following three properties:

1. The map data of the NT version uses a stronger compression algorithm, which means, it requires less memory. But these maps require a GPS device which supports this improved compression method. The following models support NT maps: GARMIN models of the Colorado- and Oregon-series, Edge 605/705, eTrex HC/HCx-series, GPSMAP60Cx/CSx, GPSMAP76Cx/CSx, Nuvi-series, StreetPilot C-series and StreetPilot 7500, Zumo-series .
   
   
2. GPS devices which support traffic information require NT maps.
   
   
3. When you transfer the detailed maps of the standard version, you have the choice to including routing information or not. Consequently, the data consumes more or less memory on the GPS. The detailed maps of the NT version always include routing information. The routing information is required for the GPS in order to compute routes, if you do not transfer the routing information, the GPS cannot calculate a route. It is useful to transfer maps without routing information if the GPS can display maps, but does not support autorouting, such as the GARMIN eMap or the GARMIN eTrex Vista.

Note: City Navigator Europe Standard has been discontinued.

Media:

The NT version of City Navigator Europe is available on two different media: DVD and uSD/SD memory card. The DVD has the advantage that the detailed maps are also available on the computer which is very convenient for planing for example. On the other hand, the maps must be unlocked for a particular GPS device - you can unlock the maps for one device. In addition, the detailed maps must be transferred from the computer to the GPS device, which might require a significant amount of time, depending on the amount of data that you wish to transfer.
The uSD/SD memory card has the advantage that the maps are immediately available as soon as you plug in the memory card. In addition, you may use the maps on any number of devices, but only on one device at the time. The GPS has to have a SD or microSD slot. The data is stored on a uSD memory card, but an uSD-to-SD adapter is included.

Version:

If the DVD does not include the latest version of the maps when you buy it, then you are entitled to download a free update to the most recent version within 60 days after purchase. You will be notified about the update when you register the map at my.garmin.com during the unlock process.

Updates for City Navigator Europe NT:

Beginning with version 2010, GARMIN provides now four map updates per year for City Navigator Europe NT. You may either buy a one time update on DVD - called "nüMaps Onetime" - or a perpetual subscription - called "nüMaps Lifetime". The later allows you to download each update through your personal MyGarmin account over the Internet to update the maps on your computer as well as on your GPS device. The subscription is valid as long as you own the same unit - and as long as GARMIN provides this service. Prerequisites are a supported GPS device with pre-installed City Navigator Europe NT (see list below), a Windows or MAC computer with Internet access and a connection cable for your GPS device. Updates also the map on your computer. You cannot update maps bought on uSD/SD memory cards.

Explanations:

1. Number of detailed maps: Number of areas that you can transfer to the GPS device individually.
   
   
2. Memory required on the GPS in MB: Amount of memory in mega bytes required to store all detailed maps of a given area on the GPS. The amount of information "Standard with routing information" is equivalent to the amount of information in the "NT version". However, due to the better compression, the NT version requires much less memory. Besides the space needed by the maps, there is an additional amount of memory required for supplemental information. This supplemental space is related to the amount of memory required by the maps, therefore it is not possible to specify the exact amount. When you select the maps in MapSource, the actual required space on the GPS is shown in the status line.
   
   
3. Data density in kB / km²: Specifies how much data in klio bytes are available for a given area. This indicates the amount of information present for this area. The higher the data density per km² the more information such as roads and points of interest are available. However, the population and the density of the road system also influence the data density. For each country, we show the data density in relation to the average data density of all of Europe.

Note: "For the given area" means all of Europe in the table above and for each country individually in the tables below.
