These are the main features:

The SUUNTO X10 provides 5 main functions with various sub-functions plus many general settings. The table below shows some sample screens on the left hand side and some brief descriptions in the right columne.

SUUNTO X10 time display 1. Time (TIME MODE):
  • Top row: Date (weekday, day and month)
  • Middle row: Time (hours, minutes)
  • Bottom row: Seconds, second time zone or stop watch

  • Three alarms
  • Stopwatch with 29 split times
  • If the GPS receiver is turned on, then the watch can synchronize its time with the high precision time signal of the satellites.
SUUNTO X10 elevation display

SUUNTO X10 sunrise and sunset
2.1 Elevation (ALTI MODE):
  • Top row: Vertical speed
  • Middle row: Current elevation (barometric measure)
  • Bottom row: Current temperature, absolute air pressure or current time

  • Elevation alarm; goes off at user specified elevation

Note: You may use the watch either as elevation meter or as barometer. If you turn on the GPS, the watch will switch to altimeter mode regardless of the current setting.

Sunrise and sunset:

The watch shows the time for sunrise and sunset at the last location measured by the GPS.

  • Top row: Date
  • Middle row: Time of sunrise
  • Bottom row: Time of sunset
SUUNTO X10 barometer display

SUUNTO X10 weather information display
2.2 Barometer (BARO MODE):
  • Top row: Normalized air pressure at sea level
  • Middle row: Air pressure diagram (graphical representation of the air pressure over the last 6 hours with 15 minutes resolution)
  • Bottom row: Current temperature, absolute air pressure or current time

  • Weather alarm: Goes off, if the air pressure changes for more than 4 hPa, rsp. 0.118 inHg within 3 hours. This is considered a typical indication for a weather chance. The weather alarm works even if the GPS is on.

Note: You may use the watch either as elevation meter or as barometer. If you turn on the GPS, the watch will switch to altimeter mode regardless of the current setting.

Weather information memory:

Records air pressure and temperature over the last 7 days, with 15 minutes resolution.

  • Top row: Weekday
  • Air pressure diagram (graphical representation of the air pressure over the whole day)
  • Middle row: Highest air pressure recorded this day
  • Bottom row: Lowest air pressure recorded this day
SUUNTO X10 compass display 3. Electronic Compass (COMPASS MODE):
  • North indicator: The small ring at the edge of the display points towards north
  • Top row: Heading in cardinal abbreviation
  • Middle row: Heading in degrees, resolution 1°
  • Bottom row: Current time, bearing or bearing lock (deviation of the current heading and the direct line to the destination)

  • Permanent display, which means the readings are constantly updated while moving (the compass is turned off automatically after 45 seconds to preserve power)
  • Automatic (GPS based) or manual setting of the declination (deviation between geographic and magnetic north)

SUUNTO X10 navigation data display
4. Navigation (NAVIGATION MODE):

Glossary:

  • Waypoint: Location within a route with name, coordinates and elevation.
  • Alarm point: Same as waypoint, but with the additional parameter radius. The alarm goes off, if the distance between your current position and the alarm point drops below the value specified in radius (proximity alarm).
  • MyPoint: Same as waypoint or alarm point, but not associated with a route. The X10 stores up to 50 MyPoints, up to 10 MyPoints can have an alarm associated with. You may use MyPoints in a route.
  • Route: List of waypoints (more precisely waypoints, alarm points and/or MyPoints) to navigate along. One route may consist of up to 50 waypoints. Navigate a route in any direction (from the first to the last waypoint or vice-a-versa). The X10 stores up to 50 routes.

The X10 supports 6 different navigation modes:

  1. Double arrow right Navigate a route forward, that means from the first to the last waypoint
  2. Double arrow left Navigate a route backward, that means from the last to the first waypoint
  3. Solid rhomboid Navigate to a waypoint
  4. Cross Navigate back to the start (location, where the GPS was turned on)
  5. Empty rhomboid Navigate to a waypoint from the MyPoints list
  6. TrackBack: Navigate along the travelled path (track) back to the start

Display waypoint within a route (first example):

  • 1. row: Name and number of the waypoint within the route
  • 2. row: Direction and distance from the current location to the waypoint
  • 3. and 4. row: Coordinates of the waypoint

Display waypoint (second example):

  • At the edge of the display: Direction to the waypoint. If the black dot is between the two lines at the top of the display, you are heading directly towards the waypoint.
  • Top row: Name and number of the waypoint within the route
  • Middle row: Distance from the current location to the waypoint
  • Bottom row: Current time, bearing (direction to the waypoint) or the value selected via navigation data (see below).

Display navigation data (NAVIDATA, third example): Specifiies, which data will be shown on the bottom row of the navigation main display. Choose from the following values:

  1. dtf: Distance to final destination.
  2. ttw: Estimated travel time to next waypoint.
  3. eta: Estimated arrival time at final destination.
  4. ete: Estimated time enroute (travel time to final destination), based on current speed and distance to final destination.
  5. spd: Current speed.
  6. hea: Heading (direction of the current movement).
  7. xte: Cross track error, shortest distance between your current position an the straight line between the last and the next waypoint.

5. Activities (ACTIVITY MODE):

When the GPS receiver is turned on, the X10 can update the current position either every second, once a minute or manually. You may change the interval setting any time. Battery life time and position record duration depend on the interval setting as shown in the table below:

Interval setting Battery lifetime* Position interval Elevation interval Record duration
1 sec 4.5 h 10 sec 10 sec 24 h
1 min 12 h 1 min 20 sec 145 h
manual min. 500 positions manual 60 sec 400 h

*) Estimated battery lifetime, the actual lifetime depends also on other factors, such as usage of the background illumination, mode changes etc.

While travelling, you can record additional positions (so called "MemPoints"), they include the following information:

  • Name, either consisting of date and time or select one of the pre-defined text expressions
  • Current heading
  • Current estimated position error (epe); if this value is small enough, the position will be stored automatically, otherwise only when confirmed by the user
  • Current coordinates
  • Current elevation

Activity display (first example):

  • 1. row: Current speed
  • 2. row: Travelled distance
  • 3. row: Current time, elapsed time since start, current elevation

Activity summary (second example), shows the follwoing values:

  • max: Maximum speed
  • avg: Average speed
  • asc: Accumulated ascend
  • dsc: Accumulated descend
  • high: Highest elevation
  • low: Lowest elevation
  • runs: Number of runs, a run is an ascent and a descent of at least 50 m (150 feet)

Log (third example), the X10 stores up to 25 logs, each consisting of:

  • log filename combination of date and starting time
  • dfs: Distance from start
  • tfs: Time from start
  • max: Max speed
  • avg: Average speed
  • asc: Accumulated ascend
  • dsc: Accumulated descend
  • high: Highest elevation
  • low: Lowest elevation
  • runs: Number of runs, a run is an ascent and a descent of at least 50 m (150 feet)

Current position (fourth example):

  • Number of satellites used to compute the current location / number of "visible" satellites
  • Estimated position error (epe)
  • Coordinates of the current position
  • Current elevation
