The following lists of changes are based on information provided by GARMIN. Changes or improvements which we consider important or especially useful are shown highlighted.

To view the current firmware version, complete the following steps:

  1. Turn on the GPS.
  2. Touch "Setup".
  3. Scroll down to the very end of the list by touching the down arrow multiple times.
  4. Touch "About...".
  5. The system will display the firmware version near the very top ("Software Version"), the unit ID on the third line, followed by various copyright information.
  6. Touch "Back" to return to the previous page.

Each upgrade replaces the complete firmware in the GPS, which means you need to install only the version you wish to apply. There is no need to install any previous versions.

IMPORTANT: If upgrading from a software version less than 4.60 you must follow these steps to maintain future BaseCamp compatibility. If you are a user of BaseCamp now, or plan to be in the future, you must follow these steps to ensure your data is protected during this software update:

  1. Connect your handheld unit to a computer and launch BaseCamp.
  2. Transfer all tracks, routes and waypoints to BaseCamp.
  3. Delete the /Garmin/GPX folder from the handheld's mass storage.
  4. Update the handheld's software via Web-Updater and reboot the handheld.
  5. Reconnect the handheld to a computer and transfer your data from BaseCamp back to the handheld.

Changes made from version 5.70 to 5.80:

  1. Improved pairing behavior with cadence sensors.
  2. Fixed possible shutdown when using the Geocaching - Active dashboard.

GARMIN Dakota 20 The GARMIN Dakota 20 is very easy to use thanks to its touchscreen and its user friendly graphical interface. It supports multiple languages, has an integrated base map, an electronic compass and a barometrical altimeter. The Dakota 20 has 850 MB of built-in memory and a slot for a standard µSD memory card to store optional maps with even more detailed information, such as local roads, restaurants and points of interest. The built-in USB interface supports data exchange with a PC. In order to use the Dakota's auto-routing feature which computes a route from the current location to any destination, an optional map which supports routing is required, such as City Navigator Europe NT, see detailed description.
