GPS receiver with fast auto-routing, voice guidance, large, excellent color display, integrated world and Europe/Africa map, pre-loaded detailed maps of all of Europe plus USB and serial interface. Well suited for navigation on land and on water in all kinds of vehicles.
The GARMIN GPSMAP278 provides fast automatic route calculation, visual and voice guidance, has a large, brilliant, easy to read color display, an extremely sensitive antenna, an integrated world map (overview) plus a base map of Europe, Africa and the near East. It has a multi-lingual user interface and is easy to use. Pre-installed detailed maps of all of Europe provide even more information, such as local roads, restaurants, points of
interest etc. for navigation on land. For navigation on water, optional Blue-Chart maps are available. The GPSMAP278 provides navigation information outdoors, in a car, in a train, on a boat or even in an airplane (see MapSource examples).

- Integrated 12 channel receiver with detachable, adjustable and very sensitive antenna, connector for external GPS antenna (external antenna available as an option)

- Manual or automatic switching of the display between daytime and nighttime, based on time and the current position (changes the colors of the display between sunset and sunrise for more comfortable viewing) Daytime: bright background, nighttime: dark background.
- Water resistant up to approx. 3 feet (1 meter) for about 30 minutes (conforms to IPX7).
- Powered by internal, recharchable battery (lasts up to 15 h) or external 12/24 V power source, e.g. from a car's lighter (power supply and 12 V power cord included).
- Short time to first fix (TTFF¹: approx. 15 seconds after a warm start, meaning there are valid coordinates of the satellites available, or approx. 45 seconds after a cold start, meaning there are no valid coordinates of the satellites available)

The GPSMAP278 supports two different navigation modes: Road navigation (Automotive mode) and navigation on water (Marine mode). The basic functions, such as position information, current speed, heading, odometer, distance and time to next turn and to final destination etc. are the same. But depending on the navigation mode, the device may display different information and provide dedicated additional functions. In addition, there are different optional maps available
for road navigation as well as for navigation on water.
